Fall 2023 Sports Recap
November 15th, 2023
The beginning of November means the end of Fall Sports, as Prep Soccer, Mountain Biking, and Cross Country wrap up their final competitions. Prep Soccer finished the year with a close loss at home against Putnam Science Academy, finishing the year with an 8-6-3 record. Mountain Biking ended their season with an emphatic victory at Norbrook Farms and South Kent’s Bodhi Walsh winning first place. Cross Country’s final race took place on Saturday, November 11, at Marvelwood School, as they competed in the NEPSTA Division IV Championships.

For over a decade and a half South Kent School Soccer has been a dominating force in the New England and the national soccer scene, this year has proven to be no different. With their November 21st win over Westminster School in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) finals, South Kent Soccer secured their tenth New England Championship and their fifth National Championship.

The game will be live streamed on Top Drawer Soccer at 1pm CST.

Three SKS Alumni just made the NCAA Soccer College Cup with the Marshall University Herd! Vinicius Fernandes ’18, Alexander Adjetey ’19, and Alejandro Giner Murillo ’20, advanced to the Division 1 Final Four with the Marshall University Men’s Soccer team after they defeated defending champs Georgetown University in the Elite 8 and #1 ranked Clemson University in the previous round.

Two SKS Alumni Sign to the NBA

Two South Kent School alumni have recently signed with teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Elijah Hughes ’16 was selected 39th in the 2nd round of the 2020 draft by the Utah Jazz. Myles Powell ’16 has signed an unaffiliated free agent contract to the New York Knicks.

Undefeated… Again!

Undefeated: the Cardinals have done it again! By going undefeated through their season, for the third time since 2011, South Kent Prep Soccer has proven that they have what it takes to go toe to toe against the top teams in the country, and dominate. This 19-0 season represents the 4th National Championship, the 9th New England Championship and the 12th Western New England Regular Season Championship for the school.

Four South Kent Selects Academy alumni were recently picked in the 2019 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. Shane Pinto ’18 was a 2nd round pick, selected 32nd overall by the Ottawa Senators. Zac Jones ’19 was drafted in the 3rd round, 68th pick, by the New York Rangers. Ethan Phillips ’19 was picked by the Detroit Red Wings in round 4 as the 97th pick. Dominic Basse ’19 was a round 6, 167th pick, to the Chicago Blackhawks.
100% of Class of ’19 SKS Soccer Grads Continuing at Collegiate Level

As the South Kent School Class of 2019 earns their diplomas, all graduating members of the soccer program will be looking forward to continuing their careers as student-athletes at the collegiate level. For the eleventh consecutive year, every graduating soccer player has an opportunity to play college soccer. This year, thirteen graduates will move on to be college student-athletes. South Kent recently held a ceremonial signing event to celebrate the accomplishments of this impressive group.

They did it! Our U18 hockey team has won back-to-back USA Hockey National Championships with a 3-2 OT victory over North Jersey Avalanche in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The South Kent Selects Academy team, representing the Central Connecticut Youth Hockey Association (CCYHA), came out on top in the tournament among the 16 best Tier I Midget AAA Youth Hockey teams in the country.
U18s to Defend National Title, U15s Ready to Join Them

South Kent Selects Academy U18 Wins the USPHL Championship!

The South Kent Selects Academy U18 team has won the USPHL Championship! After defeating the New Jersey Hitmen 3-1 on Sunday, February 24th, captain Jack Robilotti ’19 called it “a great weekend lot of great competition.” For a number of student-athletes on the team, this was the second year in a row earning this honor, as the U16s took home the title last year. “It was great to win another USPHL championship, back to-back ,” said captain Jack Robilotti '19, who is also a South Kent prefect.

South Kent Selects Academy Finalizes Head Coaches

South Kent, Conn.––South Kent Selects Academy has named two head coaches to complete its leadership team for the upcoming season. Jon Hutcheon, St. Louis Blues skills development coach and owner/lead instructor of High End Hockey, has accepted the position as head coach of the SKSA U15 team while Chris Uber has been promoted to head coach of the reigning USA Hockey Tier 1 National Champion SKSA U18 team.
Farabee and Pettersen Selected in 2018 NHL Draft

Two Selects Academy at South Kent School (SASKS) alumni were recently picked in the 2018 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. Joel Farabee ’18 was selected 14th overall in the 1st round by the Philadelphia Flyers (where he will join fellow South Kent alumnus Shayne Gostisbehere ’11). Mathias Emilio Pettersen ’18 was drafted in the 6th round at 167th overall to the Calgary Flames. Both were ranked as NHL prospects earlier this year.
We are the Champions: U18 Hockey Wins Nationals!

After five consecutive appearances at the USA Hockey National Championships, one of our CCYHA Selects Hockey teams has done it. Our U18s have won the National title! This tournament showcases the top 16 Tier I Midget AAA Youth Hockey teams in the country, and after a season focusing on commitment, emotional balance, belief, and teamwork, our boys achieved their dream.

All Three of Our CCYHA Selects Teams Make Nationals

Shayne Gostisbehere ’11 isn’t just a South Kent School alumnus. Before coming to the Hillside, the Philadelphia Flyers defenseman attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for two years. A native of Pembroke Pines, FL, the tragic events of February 14 hit close to home, literally: not only was he a student at Stoneman Douglas, but his grandparents live only a mile from the school.
Prep Basketball to host NEPSAC Class AA Boys' Basketball Tournament Quarterfinal Wednesday

The National Hockey League (NHL) Central Scouting Midterm Rankings have been announced, and five former South Kent School students have been named to the North American Skaters list. Devin Rask, Director of Selects Academy at South Kent, noted that this was the highest number of South Kent alumni to ever be on the NHL Draft Prospect Rankings at once.

Joel Farabee ’18, a previous Selects Academy at South Kent School left wing, is getting noticed by the National Hockey League (NHL) for his hard work. NHL correspondent Joe Yerdon wrote an article on Farabee, noting that despite his “small stature” compared to some others in the league, “he has earned an A rating on NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary players to watch list as a potential first-round pick” for the 2018 draft.
Selects Academy at SKS to Stand Up to Cancer in Charity Game

The Selects Academy at South Kent School U16 and U18 teams will play the North Jersey Avalanche in a charity hockey game Friday, December 1, 2017 at 6:00pm. The event will take place at Woodbridge Community Center in Woodbridge, NJ and will raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Florentino '13 & Friars are National Champions

It was an unforgettable night on Saturday, April 11th, for South Kent School alumnus Anthony Florentino '13, who helped his team win the NCAA Division I National Men's Hockey Championship. The Providence Friars won in a thrilling 4-3 finish versus Boston University. It was Florentino who scored Providence's first goal in the final game of the Frozen Four, garnering excitement from fans both in the rink and on social media.
