Flyers Defenseman Gostisbehere ’11 Invites Hockey Team from Alma Mater, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, to NHL Game

Shayne Gostisbehere ’11 isn’t just a South Kent School alumnus. Before coming to the  Hillside, the Philadelphia Flyers defenseman attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for two years. A native of Pembroke Pines, FL, the tragic events of February 14 hit close to home, literally: not only was he a student at Stoneman Douglas, but his grandparents live only a mile from the school.

When Gostisbehere learned that the Stoneman Douglas hockey team went on to win the state title just 11 days after the tragedy, he decided to invite the players and their families to be his special guests at a Flyers vs. Carolina Panthers game on Sunday, March 4. "Just to see how they won it; they didn't win a game in the round robin and then they came back...the way they handled themselves, it was pretty cool to see,” Gostisbehere said. The NHL player hoped coming out to the Flyers game would “just get their minds off of everything they’ve been going through.”

After the game, Gostisbehere met with the Stoneman Douglas team, spoke with the players, and signed autographs.
