SKS Students Add Flavor to Kent Affordable Housing’s Night of 1000 Pies

November 13th, 2018

Students in our Sustainable Cooking class recently baked savory and sweet pies, and breads to donate to Kent Affordable Housing’s Night of 1000 Pies. Using as many ingredients sourced from our north campus farm as they could, including chickens and produce they raised themselves, students prepared chicken pot pies, apple pies, apple cranberry crumble pies, banana breads, blueberry bread, banana and lemon pound cakes. The savory pot pies were in high demand, however all the items were delicious and sold out quickly. Other items donated by SKS included fresh honey harvested from our North Campus apiary and handmade goods for the Makers Market created by some talented faculty members.

The boys were excited and proud to participate and contribute to such a worthwhile event. They were happy to know that their efforts were well received”, said Ted Moore, Culinary Teacher for our Sustainable Cooking Class.

Proceeds raised by this event go toward Kent Affordable Housing’s mission to develop and support workforce housing in Kent. Apartments built and managed by Kent Affordable Housing currently house more than 50 Kent citizens with modest incomes. Three more units are scheduled for construction in 2019.

The South Kent Students have a tradition of enthusiastically supporting Kent Affordable Housing’s efforts,” said Anne Bisenius, Vice President of Kent Affordable Housing and Admissions Associate at South Kent School. “Sustainable Cooking has provided pies for several years, and the addition of the commercial kitchen at the North Campus has broadened their offerings. The Call to Serve students helped clear brush and tree limbs last spring from our Stuart Farm property prior to the occupancy of the Phase II units. SKS community members have baked goods, donated handmade items and shopped the event each fall, contributing to the greater Kent community in a meaningful and impactful way.” www.kentaffordablehousing.org/

Overall, I think the classes we had with Mr.Darrin and Mr.Moore was a great experience and would be happy to do it again.
