AMG: 20 Years of Media Technology and Student Innovation

SKS Leads Earth Day Cleanup

Every year for Earth Day, our students head out to help clean up the local environment in conjunction with the Kent Conservation Commission. Led by School Chaplain Father Klots, the boys gathered outside the “Old Building” to coordinate before splitting up into groups to cover local roads from Kent, to the South Kent campus, to Gaylordsville. Students and faculty put in quite the effort to clean and improve and save our earth.

The need to straighten out the mysteries of early Kent land ownership has become somewhat of an addiction for the two of us. We have a large copy of the original division lots map hanging in the office, and it’s way too easy to lose track of time as we ponder and puzzle what we’re seeing.

In honor of South Kent School’s founding on this day 96 years ago, Father Schell, the Headmaster of Kent School, joined us in St. Michael’s Chapel. Father Schell discussed the role of Reverend Frederick Herbert Sill, founder and former headmaster of Kent School, and two Kent alumni, Samuel Slater Bartlett and Richard M. Cuyler, in the founding of South Kent School. Of note to Father Schell was the importance in his own early years as a headmaster, of Reverend Sill’s “Letters to Sam”, a collection of words of advice from Sill to Bartlett as “Sam” navigated his early time as founder and headmaster of South Kent School.
South Kent School Kicks Off 96th Year

South Kent School has opened for its 96th year with 165 students from 22 countries and 21 American states. Families were welcomed to the Hillside on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 for Registration Day.
Four Alumni Drafted to NHL
June 25th, 2019
Four South Kent Selects Academy alumni were recently picked in the 2019 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. Shane Pinto ’18 was a 2nd round pick, selected 32nd overall by the Ottawa Senators. Zac Jones ’19 was drafted in the 3rd round, 68th pick, by the New York Rangers. Ethan Phillips ’19 was picked by the Detroit Red Wings in round 4 as the 97th pick. Dominic Basse ’19 was a round 6, 167th pick, to the Chicago Blackhawks.
U18 Hockey Wins Back-To-Back National Championships!

They did it! Our U18 hockey team has won back-to-back USA Hockey National Championships with a 3-2 OT victory over North Jersey Avalanche in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The South Kent Selects Academy team, representing the Central Connecticut Youth Hockey Association (CCYHA), came out on top in the tournament among the 16 best Tier I Midget AAA Youth Hockey teams in the country.

Head of School Andy Vadnais to Step Down; Lawrence Smith '73 Named Interim Head

After over 20 years of service, Head of School Andrew J. Vadnais will step down from South Kent effective August 27, 2018. He will take a yearlong sabbatical for the 2018-’19 academic year. Distinguished educator and SKS trustee Lawrence A. Smith ’73 will take the helm as Interim Head of School.
Farabee and Pettersen Selected in 2018 NHL Draft

Two Selects Academy at South Kent School (SASKS) alumni were recently picked in the 2018 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. Joel Farabee ’18 was selected 14th overall in the 1st round by the Philadelphia Flyers (where he will join fellow South Kent alumnus Shayne Gostisbehere ’11). Mathias Emilio Pettersen ’18 was drafted in the 6th round at 167th overall to the Calgary Flames. Both were ranked as NHL prospects earlier this year.
Frozen Four: Andrew Peeke ’16 Competes with Notre Dame

Coming up on the heels of representing Team USA at the World Junior Championship, Andrew Peeke ’16 is in the spotlight once again – this time, in the Frozen Four. The time has come for the annual battle for the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, and Peeke is poised to fight for the title with the #1 seeded University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, starting with the semifinal game vs. #2 University of Michigan TONIGHT, April 5, at 9:30 p.m. ET in St. Paul, MN.
SKS: The First Century

In 2023 South Kent School will be 100 years old! One of the ways we plan to celebrate is with the publication of a school history entitled South Kent School: The First Century. Paul Abbott has agreed to help compile and edit the volume but we hope the main authors will be those of you who witnessed and participated in the making of South Kent School history.

Shayne Gostisbehere ’11 isn’t just a South Kent School alumnus. Before coming to the Hillside, the Philadelphia Flyers defenseman attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for two years. A native of Pembroke Pines, FL, the tragic events of February 14 hit close to home, literally: not only was he a student at Stoneman Douglas, but his grandparents live only a mile from the school.
Five South Kent Alumni Ranked as 2018 NHL Draft Prospects

The National Hockey League (NHL) Central Scouting Midterm Rankings have been announced, and five former South Kent School students have been named to the North American Skaters list. Devin Rask, Director of Selects Academy at South Kent, noted that this was the highest number of South Kent alumni to ever be on the NHL Draft Prospect Rankings at once.

Joel Farabee ’18, a previous Selects Academy at South Kent School left wing, is getting noticed by the National Hockey League (NHL) for his hard work. NHL correspondent Joe Yerdon wrote an article on Farabee, noting that despite his “small stature” compared to some others in the league, “he has earned an A rating on NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary players to watch list as a potential first-round pick” for the 2018 draft.

50th Anniversary of Crew National Title

Saturday, May 28, 2016 marked an important anniversary for South Kent School. That day, fifty years ago, the South Kent School Crew won their first and only National Title after posting a 32-5 record throughout their standout season.

It was an unforgettable night on Saturday, April 11th, for South Kent School alumnus Anthony Florentino '13, who helped his team win the NCAA Division I National Men's Hockey Championship. The Providence Friars won in a thrilling 4-3 finish versus Boston University. It was Florentino who scored Providence's first goal in the final game of the Frozen Four, garnering excitement from fans both in the rink and on social media.
