Patrick Bonis Faculty Profile: The Adventure Of Teaching

Patrick Bonis joined South Kent in 2005 when the School needed a Spanish I teacher. “I had some experience with teaching and learning the language,” he notes. But like many teachers at South Kent, Mr. Bonis is a man of many talents. He now teaches Physical Science and is the “Call to Adventure” Affinity Group Coordinator.

Students in our Sustainable Cooking class recently baked savory and sweet pies, and breads to donate to Kent Affordable Housing’s Night of 1000 Pies. Using as many ingredients sourced from our north campus farm as they could, including chickens and produce they raised themselves, students prepared chicken pot pies, apple pies, apple cranberry crumble pies, banana breads...

The town of Kent welcomed the South Kent boys for another rendition of the classic Halloween "Thriller" dance on Halloween night on the field adjacent to Kent's own Heron Gallery. Thanks to almost two months of steady practice, they boys' performance did not dissapoint. As they have been for the past few years, the South Kent boys were the life (or death?) of the party.

On October 10th, South Kent School science teacher Emily Carreiro will head to the 47th annual North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) conference in Spokane, Washington. Carreiro is attending as the Interim President of the New England Environmental Education Alliance (NEEEA) and will represent the only New England private school in attendance.

Mr. Thomas Holcombe, School Organist and Director of Chapel Music, will hold an organ recital this Friday night at 7:30 pm in St. Michael’s Chapel to inaugurate the school’s newly refurbished 1852 Alvindor Andrews organ.
Yunze Liao Named AP Scholar with Honor

South Kent School announces that the College Board has recognized one of our seniors as an AP Scholar with Honor, based on the May 2018 Advanced Placement (AP) testing that was held at the school.
Yunze Liao, Class of 2019, was recognized for his high achievement on multiple Advanced Placement tests. Yunze, also known as Ryan, is from Beijing, China.
South Kent School Kicks Off 95th Year

South Kent School has opened for its 95th year with 174 students from 21 countries and 24 American states. Families were welcomed to the Hillside on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 for Registration Day.
South Kent Selects Academy Finalizes Head Coaches

South Kent, Conn.––South Kent Selects Academy has named two head coaches to complete its leadership team for the upcoming season. Jon Hutcheon, St. Louis Blues skills development coach and owner/lead instructor of High End Hockey, has accepted the position as head coach of the SKSA U15 team while Chris Uber has been promoted to head coach of the reigning USA Hockey Tier 1 National Champion SKSA U18 team.
Head of School Andy Vadnais to Step Down; Lawrence Smith '73 Named Interim Head

After over 20 years of service, Head of School Andrew J. Vadnais will step down from South Kent effective August 27, 2018. He will take a yearlong sabbatical for the 2018-’19 academic year. Distinguished educator and SKS trustee Lawrence A. Smith ’73 will take the helm as Interim Head of School.
Farabee and Pettersen Selected in 2018 NHL Draft

Two Selects Academy at South Kent School (SASKS) alumni were recently picked in the 2018 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. Joel Farabee ’18 was selected 14th overall in the 1st round by the Philadelphia Flyers (where he will join fellow South Kent alumnus Shayne Gostisbehere ’11). Mathias Emilio Pettersen ’18 was drafted in the 6th round at 167th overall to the Calgary Flames. Both were ranked as NHL prospects earlier this year.
