James Rogers ’52
October 5th, 2019
WAREHAM, MA - James Harriman Rogers, III, of Castine, ME. passed away peacefully
Saturday, October 5, 2019, at All American Assisted Living. He was born on May 5, 1933 in
Evanston, IL to Sarah Dorothea (Cholmeley-Jones) and James H. Rogers. He graduated from
The South Kent School in South Kent, CT. and then from Brown University in Providence, RI
before serving in the United States Army from 1956 - 1958 in Berlin, Germany. After his
service, Jim taught English at the Collegiate School in New York City for five years before
attending Harvard University to earn his Master’s in Education. Upon graduation, Jim accepted
a position in the Brown University Admissions Office, where he was later promoted to the
Director of Admissions, a post he kept until 1988.
During his tenure, Brown’s applicant pool was the highest amongst the Ivy League, as
reported by the New York Times in 1983. Jim attributed Brown’s new-found popularity to
publicity fed by the admission of more international students, creating a more diverse campus.
After leaving Brown, Jim and his wife, Margaret, moved to Italy where Jim opened an
educational consulting business called The Rogers Group International. Jim worked with
families outside of the US as a private secondary-school and college consultant. In 1993, Jim
and Margaret moved back to the US and settled in Castine, ME.
Jim is survived by his three daughters, Whitney Schofield, Elizabeth Rathborne and
Jessica Mellon, six grandchildren and his cat, Bodoe. He was predeceased by his wife,
Margaret Frost Rogers, in 2005.
