Jay C. Fernandes, Jr. ’70

Jay C. Fernandes Jr. of Naples, FL, and former resident of Branford, died November 5, 2018 at his summer home in Branford with his wife, son, and mother by his bedside. Jay was born to Jay and Marie Fernandes in Wilmington, Delaware on August 18, 1951. He spent his childhood in Brookfield and Simsbury, CT where he delivered papers and picked tobacco. He graduated from the South Kent School, Hobart College, and received an MBA from the University of Connecticut. Summers during college were spent laying bricks and working on oil supply ships in the North Sea.

A superb sailor, he piloted sailboats, and sailed along the eastern sea board, southern United States, and into the Bahamas upon graduating from college. He was a real estate appraiser, finance consultant, and private financial investor. He also taught economics and finance as an adjunct professor at local colleges. He was a member of the Branford Masonic Lodge and their Master in 2011. He was a lifelong member of the Thimble Islands Sailing Club. In Florida, he was an active member of the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron.

Jay is survived by his wife Linda and son U.S. Coast Guard LT. Jay C. Fernandes III (Trip) (U. S. Coast Guard LT. Colleen McCue) of Branford, his mother Marie Fernandes of Branford, sister Lisa Marvin-Smith (George) of Madison, brother Mark Fernandes (Donna) of Vermont, stepmother Grace Woodman Fernandes of Costa Rica, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Jay C. Fernandes, Sr.
