South Kent School Kicks Off 95th Year

September 6th, 2018

South Kent School has opened for its 95th year with 174 students from 21 countries and 24 American states. Families were welcomed to the Hillside on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 for Registration Day.

“Today marks the start of South Kent School’s 95th year of educating boys. South Kent’s first headmaster, Samuel S. Bartlett, established the School on three fundamental principles: Simplicity of Life, Self-Reliance, and Directness of Purpose,” Interim Head of School Lawrence A. Smith ’73 said. “Today, we continue to strive to have these three important principles inform our lives and our work. We welcome back from the summer break our returning students, and we embrace those new students who are joining our school family this year for the first time. South Kent is a boys’ school that values community and respect...In our chapel, dorms, classrooms, and on the athletic fields, we challenge our young men to pursue their best selves as we strive to model and teach a moral and ethical code that will guide our graduates throughout their lives.”

Opening events included move-in, parent and student orientation, assembly with Smith, “form” games and activities, dorm meetings and more. It is sure to be a momentous year at South Kent with a number of exciting changes. These include the welcome of a new Interim Head of School and new championship-level South Kent School Selects Academy (SKSSA) coaching staff, as well as a new state-of-the-art culinary arts building and kitchen at North Campus led by chef Ted Moore.

The sustainability-based Center for Innovation, experiential affinity program, AP offerings, partnership with Syracuse University Project Advance, prep and elite athletics, Hero’s Journey curriculum, and life lessons taught through Episcopal services at St. Michael’s Chapel are just some of the aspects that make up the rigorous, meaningful, and unique experience of South Kent.

Head of School Smith added: “Having grown up, been a student, and started my career here, South Kent School is my home in all ways. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity...to live again among South Kent’s exceptional students, family, faculty, and staff, working together to shape the bright future of the School.”
